SUMMARY OF POSITIONUnder general supervision, the Police Mental Health Coordinator is responsible for coordinating Police interventions with mental health consumers among Police and other City staff, service providers, hospital staff and advocacy groups to ensure that available health or social services are provided according to applicable City, County, State, and Federal guidelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESReviews all mental commitment/emergency detention documentation to determine cases that require follow-up.
Conducts follow-ups in person and by telephone with mental health consumers that require repeated police interventions.
Coordinates with family members and mental health service providers regarding strategies to reduce police interventions with mental health consumers.
Develops curricula and provides training to police officers, dispatchers and other operational staff regarding emergency detention procedures, crisis intervention protocols, and other mental health issues.
Establishes and maintains relationships with service providers, hospital staff and advocacy groups involved with mental health issues.
Reviews all mental health apprehensions by police.
Provides information of mental health to various community groups.

Requires knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment, and software.
Requires the ability to work effectively in stressful situations and exhibit appropriate judgment in assessing needs; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; plan, organize, and allocate time effectively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; maintain confidentiality of all information and records; and develop and present training materials and information for various groups.
Requires the ability to learn and understand the administrative directives, standard operating procedures, and training bulletins of the McKinney Police Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRequires a Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field.
Requires two years of clinical psychology experience.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSCertification as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LSCW).
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENTMust pass a drug screen and background check.
Must have Class C Texas Driver's LicenseSELECTION PROCESSSubmitted applications will be reviewed with emphasis placed on an individual's qualifications and overall experience in the areas directly related to the job function.

Expected Duration- The current external job posting will remain on the McKinney Website for the duration indicated on the posting.
Upon closing the process to fill the position will begin immediately and is expected to take approximately six weeks.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION PHYSICAL DEMANDSTasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThere is limited exposure to environmental conditions.
